Seth Godin has published a new, free PDF ebook called What Matters Now. It’s a collection of very short essays and illustrations (one page each) by contemporary writers, thinkers, and trendsetters who use one-word (mostly) themes as the basis for inspiring and exhorting readers to consider new thoughts and behaviors. The theme words are pretty diverse, including poker, compassion, social skills, sleep, gumption, government 2.0, and dozens of others.
One theme especially relevant to education is Knowing, by Dan Roam, who writes books and delivers presentations on solving problems with pictures. He says “There is no such thing as boring knowledge. There is only boring presentation.” Amen! Naturally, he illustrates his point with a picture.
This interesting collaboration is yet another demonstration of the power of free, which Chris Anderson described in his book Free: The Future of a Radical Price. Godin has a new book, Linchpin, coming out in 2010, and this freebie collection is obviously a promotional tactic for the new book, as well as for the books, blogs, and services of the contributors, yet it’s one that offers value.
